Bills, Bills, Bills
Less than a week into the Legislative Session and things are moving…let’s learn how to track legislation!
The first week of the 2025 West Virginia Legislative Session brought for changes to the House Rules, Governor Morrisey’s first State of the State Address, and the backtracking of many Republican Delegates in their co-sponsoring of a House Resolution to rename Spruce Knob, West Virginia’s highest point, to “Trump Mountain”, sparking a weekend of mocking and ridicule by constituents. But how can one keep track of all of the legislation being introduced? Let’s familiarize ourselves with the WV Legislature’s bill tracking tools.
Legislative Bulletin Board
Typically the evening before each day of session, the House of Delegates and State Senate publish a bulletin of what bills and resolutions will be introduced to each body. This provides an overview of what bills to expect prior to the text being uploaded into the Bill Status portion of the website for public consumption.
Bill Status
With 100 House of Delegates members and 34 State Senators, that makes a lot of bills being introduced in the Legislature. As of February 17th, 1,012 bills had been introduced in both chambers. While we know most of these bills will not see the light of day or pass through any committees, it is important to look at who is introducing the bills and who is co-sponsoring the legislation.
We encourage you to track what bills your representatives are introducing this session, and track their progress through the committee process to see whether they make it through to the floor for a vote with the whole body. The Bill Status page provides the opportunity to track all bills and resolutions that have been introduced, or to search by sponsor, date introduced, code sections affected, and whether they have passed out of committee or through one of the legislative bodies.
Bill Tracking
For those interested in following bills more closely, the Legislature's website offers a Bill Tracking feature, allowing users to create an account and track the status of any bill or resolution. Bill Tracking also allows you to create custom named lists of bills you wish to track, such as if you wanted to track all the education related bills or bills introduced by a certain legislator.
Let us know if you have any questions about the Legislative bill tracking process, or if there are any particular bills you see making their way through the chambers that should be given our attention!
